Kahlua Coffee Soda

June 15, 2016 by Leave a Comment

Kahlua Coffee Soda--espresso, Kahlua, and a splash of soda combine for a refreshingly fizzy, boozy, creamy cocktail.

Happy Wednesday! I’ve been a little MIA here and there and everywhere and I’ve missed this space and connecting with you all on social media. Last weekend one of my brothers-in-law got married, so now I have an sister-in-law! We’ve had family in town since and it’s been nice taking a little social media break in the midst of it and just enjoy some fam time. But, I’m back and I have this fizzy, espresso number for us to enjoy!

This cocktail is something I schemed up while I was thinking about the weirdness/goodness of an egg cream–which to me has always felt like chocolate milk soda. I figured, hey! coffee soda could be really interesting and I also just wanted an excuse to take photos of one of my favorite little things ever: the cream swirl! I’m a sucker for when you pour cream (half & half in this case) into coffee. It’s so mesmerizing to me! This soda could not be easier, too! It’s a quick, 4-ingredient refresher that doubles as a pick-me-up (thanks espresso!). I made one for my brother-in-law Dylan, who is in town from NY, and he’d like everyone to know that he whole-heartedly approves. Bonus: make this without the alcohol for a fizzy twist on iced coffee!

Kahlua Coffee Soda–espresso, Kahlua, and a splash of soda combine for a super easy, refreshingly fizzy, boozy, creamy cocktail.
Author: Cindy
Serves: 1 drink

Ingredients
  • 1 shot of espresso
  • 1½ ounces Kahlua coffee flavored liqueur
  • 2-4 dashes black walnut or aromatic bitters
  • ice
  • soda water
  • half & half
Instructions
  1. Fill a tall glass with ice, pour over a shot of espresso followed by the Kahlua, add a few dashes of bitters. Top with soda water and half & half. Sip through a straw while lounging.
Notes
You could sub the Kahlua for Bailey’s or even punch this cocktail up with the addition of vodka, whiskey, or rum! Alternatively, leave out the alcohol for a delicious and refreshing take on iced coffee.

I didn’t realize you were from Portland until you mentioned it on Snapchat today. We’re from Vancouver and heading there in September. Just booked at the Ace Hotel (I know, tourist alert, but I’m so not sorry) and we only have the weekend. Do you have any Portland guide type of posts? Or any recommendations? I force my husband to watch all these snapchat stories with me but yours is the only one he likes cause he just wants to see what delights you’re making, so I know I can trust your recommendations 😉

Nice! The Ace is really cool, so I don’t blame you! I don’t have a guide, but my short list is: Heart/Coffee, Pip’s Original/Donuts, Tea Bar/all the tea! even stuff like vanilla-rose bubble tea, Broder Nord/Brunch, Cheese and Crack/Lunch or Snacks, Ned Ludd/dinner, PaaDee/Thai, Kachka/dinner (make a res), Fifty Licks/ice cream (try the thai rice pudding flavor)…there are SO MANY places to go, so it’s hard to mess up. Also, check out Michelle of Hummingbird High for reccs, I am pretty sure she has a guide and I get all my info from her!

Just went through the list and, like, how do you know us so well? My husband is German and highly appreciates European foods – so he will be in HEAVEN at Kachka, cheese boards are our jam, Broder Nord is right up our alley, Thai is our go-to and PaaDee is killing it, Heart & Pip’s I was already planning on being our first stop, and in Vancouver, bubble tea is huge, and the Tea Bar selection looks wonderful.

If you ever come to Vancouver, let me know! I’ll return the favor!

So so gorgeous! I love the swirls of milk merging with the espresso. Speaking of the weirdness of egg-cream/coffee, when we were in Vietnam the iconic coffee of Hanoi is literally ‘egg coffee’, and this one actually has real eggs in it! It’s made with cold brew Vietnamese coffee poured over a whipped, fluffy mixture of egg yolk and condensed milk. It sounds so weird but somehow works…
